Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing how businesses operate, and the world of product compliance is no exception. As companies navigate complex global regulations, AI offers powerful new ways to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and strategic decision-making. We recently brought together a panel of experts to discuss this transformation in our webinar, “Market Perspectives: The Future of AI in Product Compliance.”
Our speakers, including leaders from 3E and industry analyst Nathan Goldstein from Verdantix, explored the current state of AI adoption, the challenges businesses face, and the immense potential AI holds for Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) and product compliance. As Senior Vice President of Go-to-Market at 3E, Maria Rutland, framed the discussion, the goal was to
“…explore and unpack how AI is transforming compliance, sustainability, and innovation across industries.”
Here's a summary of the key takeaways from that conversation.
The State of AI Adoption in EHS and Compliance
While AI is a major topic of conversation, its practical application is still in the early stages for many. The data reveals a cautious but optimistic approach to integrating AI into compliance workflows.
A significant 56% of companies are currently piloting AI in at least one workflow or are beginning to scale it across multiple functions. However, only a small fraction-just 3%-have achieved widespread, organization-wide adoption. This indicates that most businesses are still testing the waters, identifying the best use cases, and building the foundation for broader implementation.
The financial commitment to this technology is growing. According to 3E’s market research, 31% of companies expect to spend more than one million dollars on advanced AI applications for EHS and product compliance over the next three years. This planned investment signals a strong belief in the long-term value and ROI of AI in this critical business area.
Integrating AI: Platforms vs. Standalone Tools
How will companies access these new AI capabilities? The consensus points toward integrated solutions. An overwhelming majority of businesses are not looking to add yet another standalone tool to their tech stack.
Approximately 70% of respondents expect to use advanced AI within their existing EHS or product compliance software. This preference for platform-native AI highlights the desire for seamless integration, a unified user experience, and the ability to leverage existing data and workflows. A powerful AI engine is most effective when it works in harmony with the systems you already trust.
Overcoming the Barriers to AI Adoption
The path to successful AI implementation is not without its challenges. Our experts identified several key hurdles that organizations must overcome to unlock the full potential of AI in compliance.
The Challenge of Data Quality
The single biggest barrier to AI adoption is internal data quality for use in AI. AI models are only as good as the data they are trained on. Inaccurate, incomplete, or poorly organized data can lead to unreliable outputs, undermining the very purpose of using AI. Before an organization can effectively deploy AI, it must first ensure its data is clean, structured, and trustworthy.
The Need for Human Oversight
In the high-stakes world of compliance, accuracy is non-negotiable. The cost of getting it wrong can be immense, from regulatory fines to brand damage. This is why a “human-in-the-loop” approach is essential.
As Neil Abdalla, head of global partnerships at 3E, noted,
“…a human over the loop is kind of the way that customers are thinking about this, due to the criticality and cost of noncompliance of getting this wrong.”
AI should be viewed as a powerful assistant that augments the capabilities of human experts, not as a complete replacement for them. This model ensures that critical decisions are validated by experienced professionals.
Building a Foundation of Trust
Ultimately, successful AI adoption at a platform level hinges on a single, crucial element: trust. Bobby Shackleton, Senior Director of Product Management at 3E, put it best:
“…when I think about impact and the way a platform for AI will advance, it really starts with trust.”
This trust is built on four key pillars:
- Reliable Data: Confidence that the underlying information is accurate and current.
- Expertise: Assurance that the AI is guided by deep domain knowledge.
- Governance: Clear rules and processes for how AI is used and managed.
- Security: Robust measures to protect sensitive compliance and formulation data.
When purchasing an AI application, customers prioritize performance, reliability, and accuracy above all else. These criteria are fundamental to building the trust needed for widespread adoption.
EHS: A Prime Candidate for AI Innovation
While AI has applications across the business, the EHS function is emerging as a leader in applying this technology. This is partly due to the nature of the work itself.
“EHS, as we all know, is a very compliance-driven practice,” explained Nathan Goldstein of Verdantix. He continued, “…what we’re seeing with AI in this space is a very easy, easy win, low-hanging fruit for regulatory compliance.”
The structured, data-rich, and rule-based nature of compliance makes it an ideal environment for AI to deliver immediate value, from monitoring regulatory changes to automating reporting tasks.
Despite the technological advancements, it’s important to remember the human element. EHS is, at its core, a human-centric function dedicated to protecting people and the environment. AI is simply the next evolution in a long line of tools designed to help EHS professionals do their jobs more effectively and efficiently.
