Industrial machinery manufacturers, from makers of automotive parts to large-scale equipment, face a unique and growing set of pressures. The need to deliver innovative, high-performance products must now coexist with complex global regulations and increasing demands for sustainability. Effective supply chain data collection is no longer a secondary task-it is a critical business function essential for market access, risk mitigation, and long-term growth.

Navigating this landscape requires a deep understanding of product composition and supplier activities. Yet, many organizations find themselves struggling. Our recent market research highlights the specific challenges industrial machinery companies face in achieving their compliance and sustainability goals, revealing a clear need for smarter data management strategies.

This article will explore key trends and considerations in supply chain data collection for the industrial machinery sector. We will cover the primary pain points reported by industrial machinery manufacturers, how they are leveraging technology to overcome them, and where future investments are heading.

The Core Challenges in Industrial Machinery Compliance

The industrial machinery sector operates within a web of intricate regulations. Balancing compliance mandates like PFAS reporting under TSCA Section 8(a)(7) and EU RoHS with sustainability initiatives such as carbon accounting and the EU Digital Product Passport (DPP) creates significant operational friction.

Our research identified the most pressing pain points for compliance, product, and sustainability managers in this industry. The top challenge, by a significant margin, is the inability to keep up with new and evolving regulations. This is closely followed by difficulties in engaging with suppliers, who often do not respond to data requests or provide poor-quality information. As a result, many companies can only manage compliance for the highest-risk segments of their portfolio, leaving the rest of their products exposed.

These challenges are compounded by complex buying committees within manufacturing organizations. Decisions about compliance solutions often involve multiple stakeholders from product compliance, sustainability, supply chain, and regulatory teams, each with their own set of priorities and concerns.

Embracing Technology: The Rise of Compliance Management Software

To manage this complexity, industrial machinery manufacturers are increasingly turning to specialized software. Our research shows that a significant majority-88% of respondents-use a third-party software solution to handle their supply chain data collection. This trend is relatively recent, with 59% of these users having onboarded their software within the last three years.

This rapid adoption underscores a fundamental shift in how the industry approaches compliance. Manual processes and spreadsheets are no longer sufficient to manage the volume and velocity of regulatory and sustainability data required. A dedicated compliance management software provides the structure, automation, and scalability needed to stay ahead.

The investment in these tools is not just a one-time decision; it’s a growing commitment. A look at spending patterns reveals a clear upward trend:

  • 57% of surveyed companies reported that their spending on third-party supply chain data collection solutions has increased over the last two years.
  • Of those, 21% saw their spending increase by more than 10%.
  • The primary driver for this spend is data collection for product compliance, accounting for 45% of the investment in third-party solutions.

Future-Proofing Operations: Anticipating Future Spend

The momentum behind investing in supply chain data solutions shows no signs of slowing down. Looking ahead, the trend is set to continue its upward trajectory.

Our survey found that 57% of industrial machinery companies anticipate their spending on these solutions will continue to rise in the coming two years. Nearly a third (29%) expect that increase to be 6% or more. The motivations for this future spending mirror the reasons for past increases, with two key factors leading the way:

  1. Addition or increase of services, such as managed data collection and expert consulting.
  2. An increase in the number of suppliers from which data must be collected.

This forward-looking investment is reshaping the industry. Three years ago, an estimated 45% of industrial machinery manufacturers operated without a third-party supply chain data collection solution. In three years, respondents anticipate that number will drop to just 19%. This signals a decisive move toward technologically-driven compliance and sustainability management as the new industry standard.

How 3E Provides a Path Forward

The challenges are clear, but so are the solutions. 3E is designed to directly address the pain points experienced by industrial machinery manufacturers, offering a comprehensive approach to supply chain data collection and compliance management.

Overcoming Supplier Non-Response

The Pain Point: “My suppliers do not respond to my requests,” or “My suppliers provide poor quality responses.”

The 3E Solution: We recognize that supplier engagement is often the biggest hurdle. Our platform features scalable, reusable supplier surveys that are easy for your partners to use, encouraging higher response rates and better data quality. For an even higher level of support, our expert-managed Supply Chain Data Collection Services act as an extension of your team. With time-tested processes and a global team offering 24/7 in-language supplier support, we can secure the data you need, even from unresponsive suppliers.

Staying Ahead of Regulatory Change

The Pain Point: “I cannot stay on top of new and changing regulations.”

The 3E Solution: Our 3E Exchange platform is backed by a global team of regulatory experts who continuously monitor the legislative landscape. The platform's integrated Horizon Scanning capabilities provide early warnings of upcoming regulatory changes, giving you the time and insight needed to prepare for new requirements like those related to PFAS TSCA 8(a)(7). This proactive approach transforms compliance from a reactive scramble into a strategic advantage.

Managing Your Entire Product Portfolio

The Pain Point: “I can only manage compliance for high-risk segments of my portfolio.”

The 3E Solution: Selective compliance creates hidden risks. 3E Exchange provides the scalability to manage your entire product catalog, not just a small fraction of it. By centralizing data and automating workflows, our platform empowers you to apply compliance standards consistently across all products, ensuring comprehensive coverage and minimizing risk. We also support emerging requirements like EU DPPs, helping you share critical data seamlessly across the value chain.

Building a Resilient Supply Chain

For industrial machinery manufacturers, the path to resilience and growth runs directly through intelligent supply chain data collection. As regulations multiply and sustainability becomes a core business driver, having a robust compliance management software and expert support is no longer a luxury-it is essential.

By investing in the right tools and partnerships, you can transform compliance from a source of friction into a catalyst for innovation and market leadership.
